I was raised in the church. I know that Deacon’s are supposed to be looked upon as great men of God. The bible says they are supposed to be faithful to their wives and stay away from strong drink. Well, I’m sorry to say that one among you has not been keeping that vow very well. I know that everyone knows that Deacon Williams, also known as Benson, has had a drinking problem in the past. Unfortunately, that is not all he has.

For the last year, I’ve been having an affair with Deacon Williams. (If anyone doubts that I am telling the truth, I can share with you some intimate details that will, without a doubt, prove what I’m saying is true.) This was not a one-time thing. I believe that we are in love. I am not proud of my relationship with him because I know that it is adultery but, as I have said, I’m at the point where I have no other options. Anyway, yesterday I told Benson that I was pregnant with his child and at first, I thought that he would be happy. We went to my house, made love, and then, he began to drink. Alot. I’ll admit that this scared me a bit because he’d stopped drinking over the last couple of months. But then, everything turned bad. He began to hit me. For an hour, he went back and forth between telling me how much he loved me (which I still believe) to smacking me around. I tried to leave so he could calm down but he wouldn’t let me. Finally, he left. I’ve tried to call him. I’ve tried to reach him but he won’t return my calls. I know that he may just be scared but after waiting all night for him to call me, I began to panic.

I am eighteen years old. I have no family. I have no money. I don’t know why I’m writing this letter except to say that this man is all I have. I know he and his wife are a “pillar” of this church but I will do anything I have to do to either bring him back to me or make sure that he pays for what he’s done to me.

I’m so sorry.

MOJ

After reading the letter, Kara’s limbs felt heavy. Her face burned hot with anger and embarrassment and her eyes were completely blurred by her tears. Before she could find a verbal response to the pain, everything went black. Kara passed out in C.J’s arms.

C.J was beside herself with both rage and sadness. One sentence stood out to her out of all of the other horrible ones. I am eighteen years old. She was so tempted, even if it was selfish, to unload her own pain right then and there and yet holding the woman who served as a mother to her after losing her own, and after losing the grandmother who was her everything, she knew she could never release her own pain without deepening Kara’s and ultimately, losing her, too.
